Letter | Monument honors Gold Star families

Families of fallen military members since Sept. 11, 2001, were honored at the seventh annual Survivors Day at the Races at Churchill Downs on Nov. 7. These families and all other families who lost a family member that fought for our freedom since the Revolutionary War now have permanent monuments in Kentucky to honor all families.

One monument is located in the Kentucky Veterans Cemetery at Greenup and one was dedicated on June 24, 2016, in the Kentucky Veterans Cemetery-Central at Radcliffe, Ky., near Fort Knox.

Hershel "Woody" Williams, World War II Medal of Honor recipient, established the Hershel Woody Williams Medal of Honor Foundation in 2010 for the purpose of placing a Gold Star Families Memorial Monument in all 50 states. There are thousands of monuments all across our nation honoring our military and those who served our nation in its time of need but none to their families until now.

The Gold Star Families Memorial Monument is the only one that honors all families who had a family member that sacrificed their life for our freedom. The Kentucky Veterans Cemetery is open seven days a week for visitors to see this beautiful monument, which was dedicated to families.
